INDIA – Sun Pharma has launched a novel formulation antitussive syrup, Chericof 12 manufactured using Polistirex technology for sustained drug release.

The syrup is the first prescription cough syrup that gives continuous relief for a minimum of 12 hours, courtesy of the Polistirex technology used in its development.

Cough syrups generally provide relief for 6-8 hours, so a patient must take it three to four times per day. Frequent dosing normally causes patient inconvenience and non-adherence to the regimen, which can compromise medication efficacy and disrupt daily life.

Prescription non-compliance is a significant problem facing the healthcare system, significantly contributing to economic burden, including the costs of avoidable hospitalizations, and at worst premature deaths.

Speaking in this respect, Kirti Ganorkar, Sun Pharma India Business CEO noted, “At Sun Pharma, we always endeavour to introduce differentiated medicines that enhance convenience or solve patients’ problems, thus helping them to cope better with their ailments. The polistirex technology used in Chericof 12 helps in improving patient compliance and avoids the need for frequent dosing.”

Chericof 12 is indicated for patients aged six years and above. Chericof 12 is made by combining the resin granules of both Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide and Chlorpheniramine drugs in suspension.

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic that relieves allergy symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing, whereas dextromethorphan hydrobromide is a cough suppressant that relieves cough by reducing cough center activity in the brain.

Drug complexation with polistirex not only provides prolonged release of active ingredients but also masks the bitter taste, making it more pleasant.

According to one study, a twice-daily dosing regimen is associated with significantly better compliance in 70% of patients than a three-times-a-day (52%) and four-times-a-day (42%) dosing regimen, respectively.

Chericof 12’s polistirex technology provides sustained release of the medicine in the body, providing up to 12 hours of relief to patients on a twice-daily basis.

Chericof 12 is a prescription medication that should only be taken on the advice of a doctor, according to the drug manufacturer.
