JAPAN – Olympus Corporation (Olympus), a global medtech company has released EU-ME3, a new Endoscopic Ultrasound Processor that addresses healthcare professionals’ needs for high-quality clear images when performing endoscopic ultrasound procedures.

EU-ME3 will be launched in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, parts of Asia, and Oceania this fiscal year, according to the company’s press release.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) imaging is used to support the diagnosis of lesions in the pancreas, bile ducts, or lesions deep inside the body that are not visible with gastrointestinal endoscopes.

Furthermore, the technology improves the detailed examination of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and cancer invasion in the stomach and esophagus.

Endoscopic ultrasound is also useful in visualizing endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) for early, minimally invasive diagnosis and staging of lung cancer.

The goal of EU-ME3 is to provide seamless workflow integration for our partners while also expanding the dimensions of endosonography to improve overall patient outcomes.

According to a press release, it also supports fluorescence-guided surgery. Ahead of its release, Olympus will face competition from fellow Japan-based FUJIFILM Corporation, which has developed a convex ultrasonic endoscope, the EG-740UT, for the upper gastrointestinal tract.

The EG-740UT is equipped with a specialist guide wire locking mechanism and a new distal end configuration.

Its distinct design enables endoscopic instruments to be visualized within the endoscopic field of view, with the aim of improving the efficiency and user-friendliness of the Ultrasound endoscope during the procedure.

By using a newly developed high-performance transducer, Fujifilm’s Ultrasound endoscope “EG-740UT” has improved ultrasound transmission and reception sensitivity, the company claims.

In another recent development, Olympus released Visera Elite III surgical visualization platform for endoscopic surgery.

The Visera Elite III system is designed to provide all imaging capabilities in a single platform. Its applications include minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic colectomy and cholecystectomy.

Visera Elite III combines the previous generation’s 3D and infrared imaging capabilities with the 4K imaging capabilities of the Visera 4K UHD system.

Olympus combined its medical device expertise with Sony’s digital imaging technology to create Visera Elite III. The companies developed it through the Sony Olympus Medical Solutions joint venture.

Further to this development, Olympus has also unveiled Thunderbeat open fine jaw type X surgical energy devices for open surgery, adding to its Thunderbeat portfolio, which includes hybrid energy devices that deliver both ultrasonic and bipolar energy simultaneously.
