GHANA – Nationwide Medical Insurance (NMI), a leader in the private health insurance sector of Ghana, has partnered with Novartis to build the capacity of about 300 healthcare professionals on improved ways to prevent and manage vaso-occlusive crisis in patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).

Nationwide Medical Insurance provided virtual CPD accredited training for healthcare workers in Ghana to help participants transform patient- centered care in sickle cell disease management through shifting treatment paradigms in clinical practice that will provide solutions to improve patient care.

The health insurance company has provided healthcare financing solutions including corporate health insurance, micro health insurance, international health insurance, third party administration and international medical evacuation to over 400 clients and individuals across industries in Ghana.

It is registered under laws of Ghana and licensed by National Health Insurance Authority to provide health insurance plans to corporate entities, groups, associations and individuals.

The firm employs an innovative and technology-led approach to improving systems and processes, with approximately 65,000 registered members, over 600 accredited medical centres and over 200 medical conditions covered.

Recently, the private health insurance company partnered with Novartis in an effort to boost patient’s access to quality healthcare services as well as support healthcare systems for improved healthcare for subscribers and patients who receive care at its accredited healthcare service providers.

The collaboration also aimed at fostering peer-to-peer education around sickle cell disease to increase disease awareness and build healthcare professional capacity for SCD management and significantly lower local barriers to healthcare delivery.

The capacity building training session was attended by about 300 healthcare professionals who were mainly physicians of accredited healthcare service providers of Nationwide Medical Insurance across Ghana.

The training sought to address the shortage of specialized providers and gaps in coordination among the various primary care physicians and specialists who might treat an individual living with sickle cell disease.

Chief Executive Officer of Nationwide Medical Insurance Mrs. Nancy Ampah acknowledged Novartis for deciding to partner with the insurance company on the health initiative, noting that the partnership was aimed at building the capacity of its healthcare delivery partners to ensure better healthcare outcomes.
