MOROCCO – Moroccan Pharmacist Lamia Tazi was named in the annual Forbes’ list under the “Top 50 Healthcare Leaders 2022” list for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the only Moroccan and North African in the list.

Lamia Tazi graced the Forbes magazine’s 2022 list featuring the most impactful and innovative leaders in the healthcare industry across the Middle East and North Africa region.

Forbes Middle East is a licensed edition of Forbes for the Arab world ranking leaders that span the healthcare ecosystem including people from hospitals, clinics, pharmaceutical companies, diagnostics centers and health technology providers.

Forbes magazine took into consideration several criteria during the ranking such as the size and revenue of the companies, the impact of the leaders on the region’s healthcare sector, innovative initiatives implemented and their experience in the sector.

Heads of pharmaceutical companies dominate the list with 20 entries followed by 19 heads of the largest hospitals that are influencing the lives of millions of people in the Middle East and globally.

The United Arab Emirates dominated the list with 25 firms of the 50 leaders heading firms based in the emirates, followed by Saudi Arabia with 13, six in Egypt, two from Qatar and one each from Kuwait, Algeria, Jordan and Morocco – Sothema.

Sothema has been manufacturing and marketing pharmaceutical products since 1976 representing 35 international contracting laboratories including Novartis, Biopharm, Biocon, and Aspen Holding.

Lamia Tazi, the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of Moroccan pharmaceutical company Sothema, came in 28th place for her immense contribution to the development of the pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years.

She joined Sothema in 1997 as a pharmacist as well as the executive assistant to the CEO, climbed the ladder to become a general manager and finally landed the CEO position in 2019.

Moreover, she is a PHD holder with a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from the University of Liege in Belgium and managing Director at the Advanced Scientific Developments.

Sothema CEO Lamia Tazi was acknowledged alongside fellow African honorees namely Mohsen Mahgoub, Fahad Khater, Sherine Hassan Helmy and a few others.

Mohsen Mahgoub is the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Ibnsina Pharma which distributes pharmaceutical products from over 350 Egyptian and multinational companies to more than 46,000 pharmacies, hospitals, retail outlets and wholesalers.

He is also the chairman of the Arab International Investment Group and sits on the boards of the Faisal Islamic Bank of Egypt and Dar El Eyoun Hospital.

Fahad Khater was recognized on the technology front as the owner and Chairman of Egyptian Alameda Healthcare which partnered with CMR Surgical to offer robotic-assisted surgery.

Sherine Hassan Helmy, CEO of Egyptian Pharco Corporation which develops, manufactures and distributes pharmaceutical products across over 50 countries was also featured in the Top 50 Healthcare Leaders.
