KENYA – The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) has appointed Dr. David Gicheru Kariuki as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective 1st October 2022.

KMPDC is a statutory authority established under Cap 253 Laws of Kenya with a mandate to regulate the training, practice and licensing of medicines &dentistry and healthcare institutions.

It aims to ensure the provision of quality and ethical care in healthcare institutions including private & mission hospitals, medical, dental centers & clinics, nursing and maternity homes and standalone funeral homes.

The Council is committed to regulating medical practitioners and health facilities to ensure quality healthcare is delivered to all Kenyans.

According to the government agency regulating health in Kenya, Dr. Gicheru Kariuki is an experienced health practitioner and administrator who will take over from long servicing CEO Dr. Daniel Yumbya.

Commenting on his appointment, KMPDC Chair Dr. Eva Njenga said: “Dr. Kariuki’s extensive healthcare management and policy development background together with his demonstrated acumen in financial and human resource management.”

 She further said that the new CEO brings to the table a wealth of experience which makes him an asset in enabling the Council deliver its mandate of ensuring quality healthcare for all Kenyans.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Kariuki served as the Senior Deputy Director of Medical Service (SDDMS) in charge of the department of Health Policy and Research Development at the Ministry of Health.

He also served as principal developer of the first roadmap towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under the “Big Four” Government Agenda and led the UHC Policy efforts at the Ministry of Health.

In addition, he holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Management from Strathmore University, a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics & Gynecology as well as a Bachelors of Medicine and a Bachelors of Surgery from the University of Nairobi.

Besides having a Diploma in Health Systems Management, Dr. Kariuki is a member of the Kenya Obstetrics & Gynecological Society, Kenya Medical Association and is a Fellow of the East, Central, Southern Africa College of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
