KENYA – Kenya-based startup Afya Rekod has partnered with United States GE Healthcare to transform healthcare delivery through improved access to personal health data in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.
Afya Rekod is an Adanian Labs startup with over 150,000 users in 5 countries and can be accessed via an app, android and IOS, or web portal.
It is a digital health data platform that focuses on the patient by allowing both patients and health facilities to capture, store and access the mobility of the patient’s health data.
The platform does this through aggregating information on pharmacies and other key resources to allow easy accessibility and recording of health data by patients.
To protect confidentiality, Afya Rekod uses various AI and blockchain modules and the patient maintains the sovereign right of ownership to their health data.
Patients can capture, store, access and own their health records which has multiple benefits including reducing the cost of repeating medical tests.
For providers, the platform has multiple functionalities like hospital management, patient management, knowledge management and inventory management.
Afya Rekod is focused on building a dynamic platform that streamlines health records with analytics and provides access to specialized clinics and experts.
Health data has become one of the most urgent issues for health management globally amid the COVID-19 outbreak and the healthcare problem can be addressed by innovative private companies like Afya Rekod.
CEO Afya Rekod John Kamara said the partnership with GE will allow for a seamless flow of data from the medical equipment directly to the app and into patients’ hands.
“The partnership will give patients an accessible record of their own health history including radiological images by enabling hospitals and diagnostic centers to host health records securely on one platform through a digital application,” Further said John Kamara.
It will enable patients and clinicians to access data and generate clinical, operational and financial insights that provide them with a more holistic view of the patient.
“The app will also allow clinicians to view data and share with other experts, enabling them to make better informed diagnoses and decisions,” noted the CEO.
Both patients and clinicians will be able to access imaging files and test results through an app on their phones or browser without having to go back to the health clinic to collect the files.
“We want families to have access to their medical records virtually and access them any time, in a matter of seconds,” assured John Kamara.
