KENYA – Kenya has commissioned the new KES 157 million (US$1.4m) Njoro Level 4 Sub-County Hospital in Nakuru County to benefit over 200,000 residents with quality healthcare delivery.

The advanced medical facility houses a modern maternity and neonatal wing, a pharmacy, x-ray machines and modern laboratories.

It also features an outpatient complex, accident and emergency unit, an imaging center and theatres among other essential medical services.

Additionally, the outpatient complex will offer the highest standard of medical training and top quality of specialized healthcare services.

The hospital will further host trauma, accident and emergency, obstetrics, gynecology, ophthalmology, pharmacy, radiology and radiotherapy and minor surgery theatres among other departments.

The new Njoro Hospital will cater to injured patients received from the notorious Sobea-Salgaa-Sachangwan-Mau Summit-Makutano accident black spot along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

It will serve Nakuru’s 11 Sub-counties namely Kuresoi South, Kuresoi North, Molo, Njoro, Rongai, Subukia, Bahati, Nakuru Town West, Nakuru Town East, Gilgil and Naivasha as well as adjoining areas.

The 10th ultra-modern health infrastructure in the County is part of current county government administration’s KES 1.8 billion (US$16m) upgrade programme of health care facilities across the 11 Sub-Counties.

Moreover, the County and National Governments have partnered with Kenya Electricity Generating Company to launch a modern KES 330 million (US$3m) outpatient complex at the Naivasha Sub-County Referral Hospital which is expected to be operational within the next 3 months.

Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui said that his administration is expected to achieve its target of having modern inpatient and outpatient facilities in every Sub-County by June this year.

The investment in modern outpatient units across Nakuru is part of the county administration’s efforts to revamp the county’s health sector and improve efficiency in emergency response,” Lee explained.

He further revealed that the county government would establish trauma centres at the Nakuru Level 5 Teaching and Referral Hospital at Naivasha Sb-County and Salgaa town to cater for accident victims.

The Level 5 hospital serves more than eight counties in the South Rift region including Bomet, Kericho, Samburu, Baringo, Nyandarua and Laikipia where 2,000 patients are treated daily with 750 of them being inpatients.

He maintained that the County administration sought to decongest the Nakuru Level 5 Teaching and Referral Hospital by modernizing all Sub- County hospitals.

The hospital will supplement the already complete KES 650 million (US$6m) outpatient facility at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital on provision of quality and affordable medical services for all residents,” added Governor Lee

He stated that the facility will supplement the KES 40 million (US$350,000) centre of excellence for mental health care at the Gilgil Sub-County Hospital and KES 60 million (US$520,000) Level 4 health facility at Karuswa in Bahati Sub-County as well.

The Governor disclosed that another County Government health facility under construction nearing completion is the KES 60 million (US$520,000) outpatient complex at Olenguruone Health Centre.

The additional outpatient units will address the increased influx of referrals from other hospitals and health centres within the larger Rift Valley while offering quality and affordable disease diagnostic, management and treatment services.

Currently, Nakuru County runs 184 health facilities including dispensaries, health centres, level four hospitals and the Nakuru Level Five Hospital.
