KENYA – Global body Family Planning 2030 (FP2030) has announced its new East and Southern Africa regional hub in Nairobi, Kenya to strengthen family planning access and reproductive health and rights in the region.
FP2030 focuses on bringing together the widest possible range of partners across disciplines and sectors while situating family planning at the crossroads of the global health, development and gender equality agendas.
It is the central platform for family planning that provides an unparalleled space for stakeholders to convene, align, share knowledge, broker resources and advance the field.
Family Planning 2030 partnered with Amref Health Africa to launch the new regional hub in order to help build momentum for the rights-based family planning movement at community, national, regional and global levels.
The East and Southern Africa Regional Hub will support initiatives in Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The Nairobi-based hub will also collaborate with the existing North America and European Hub to support country-specific activities through mobilizing existing commitments and generating new commitments from the region.
In addition, it will advance advocacy and accountability for family planning policy development and implementation to ensure access to sexual and reproductive health care, services and commodities.
It will also leverage partnerships with governments, civil society and youth-led organizations to create synergies that will maximize opportunities for growth and impact linking these efforts to a strong regional and global network.
Global CEO Amref Health Africa Dr. Githinji Gitahi said the organization will support FP2030 in promoting access to quality family planning services as an essential component of quality reproductive health care for our women and girls.
He further said that Amref Health Africa would leveraging its convening power and experience in providing sub-grants to large, medium and small organizations to achieve scale family planning services.
“We will also make use of innovative platforms to ensure the participation of grassroots and national advocates in the region by equipping them with the resources they need to accelerate the FP2030 agenda,” Dr. Githinji Gitahi added.
FP2030’s mission is to create a future where women and girls everywhere have the freedom and ability to lead healthy lives, make their own informed decisions about using contraception and having children as well as participate as equals in society and its development.
FP2030 will further collaborate with Amref to urge governments, civil society organizations and other implementers of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights to accelerate interventions and policies that offer quality of care for women and girls.
For instance, the Kenyan government pledged to increase the modern contraceptive prevalence rate for married women from 58% to 64% by 2030 and reduce unmet need for family planning for all women from 14% to 10% by 2030.
