INDIA – GE Healthcare has launched its first ‘Made in India’, ‘AI-powered’ Cath lab – Optima IGS 320 to advance cardiac care in India.

According to the company’s press statement, the Cath lab is built at Wipro GE Healthcare’s new factory launched under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in Bengaluru.

The world is witnessing a surge in the number of cases of cardiovascular diseases over the years, which is leading to an increased demand for angiography equipment and is projected to boost market growth.

A paper published in PubMed stated in December 2020 that there were 270 million cases of cardiovascular diseases in 1990, which nearly doubled to 523 million in 2019.

It also states that the number of people who died from cardiovascular disease increased from 12.1 million in 1990 to 18.6 million in 2019.

In India, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) contribute to 60 percent of all deaths, of which, 82 percent occur due to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), chronic respiratory diseases, cancer, and diabetes.

The company claims that this new generation of interventional imaging software in Optima IGS 320 enables clinical versatility to guide sophisticated non-invasive procedures with greater precision.

According to the company, AutoRight is the first neural network-based interventional image chain. It features artificial intelligence that automatically optimizes image and dose parameters in real time, enabling clinicians to focus on patients.

GE’s AI-enabled Cath lab will aid to drive intelligent imaging to support cardiologists and patients with customized treatment protocols and therapies and enable access to quality healthcare across all of India.

The company claimed that the medical device, Optima IGS320, is mainly designed for cardiac and electrophysiology procedures, advancing visualization across imaging to support intelligent healthcare delivery.

The rising complexity of patient profiles and shifting disease patterns is making the need for personalized care even more vital and Artificial Intelligence solutions have the potential to transform the patient care pathway.

Earlier in 2022, Wipro GE Healthcare had also launched Revolution Aspire CT (Computed Tomography) scanner.

It was the first product that was designed and manufactured end-to-end in India and was launched at the company’s Medical Devices Manufacturing plant.

Reportedly, Optima IGS320 is the second product being launched at the new factory.

The rising innovations in the market and the launch of advanced angiography equipment by the market players are widening the scope of angiography equipment and are anticipated to propel the growth of angiography equipment.

In March 2020 FDA approved medical device company Kinepict Health’s Kinepict Medical Imaging Tool (KMIT) software which uses the Digital Variance Angiography (DVA) technology and provides superior image quality compared to the conventionally-used technologies.

In the same year, GE Healthcare introduced the Allia IGS 7 angiography system at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). The system makes use of artificial intelligence and allows better use of rotational angiography.

Several other innovative products are being launched by various companies, leading to improvements in the angiography process, and are anticipated to spur the growth of angiography equipment.
