EGYPT – Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has issued an executive order to transform Nasser Institute for Research and Treatment into a research hub and an integrated medical city in a move to improve healthcare quality.

The integrated medical city will include new buildings for abdominal and pediatric diseases, outpatient clinics, a genetic disease research center and laboratory as well as an airstrip and river ambulance services.

President Sisi further ordered the establishment of the Egyptian Academy of Mathematical Sciences to embrace the brilliant minds in the auditing field and providing them with scientific support.

The Academy of Mathematical Sciences will further contribute to the academic linking between mathematics and emerging technologies along with the development of the software industry and cybersecurity in Egypt,” said President Sisi.

During an official meeting with President Sisi and Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar made a presentation of a development plan for the Institute aiming at expanding the oncology building.

Abdel Ghaffar explained that the institute is one of the most important pillars of the health system in Egypt as it receives about 1.6 million patients annually thus the expansion will provide treatment and effectively manage growing numbers of patients.

He also briefed the President on the activities of the Glasgow’s Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon in Egypt which will begin in 2022 to provide training programs and hold fellowship exams.

“The Glasgow’s Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon will provide opportunities in the field of ophthalmology in cooperation with the Egyptian Institute of Ophthalmology Research and in dentistry in cooperation with the Faculty of Dentistry at Ain Shams University,” Abdel Ghaffar disclosed.

 President Sisi further directed the establishment of a permanent headquarters of the Glasgow’s Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon in the new administrative capital which is a large-scale project of a new capital city in Egypt that has been under construction since 2015.

The President was also briefed on the latest developments regarding the implementation of presidential initiatives in the health sector particularly the initiative to eliminate patient waiting lists and the epidemiological situation of the COVID-19 virus in Egypt.

According to the briefing, Egypt has implemented 289 projects in health and population sector during the past three years at a total estimated cost of about EGP 9.6 billion (US$520 million)
