DJIBOUTI – Djibouti’s Ministry of Health has secured a US$4M fully equipped mobile field hospital from the United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), designed to provide a safe environment for administering advanced-level medical care.
Mobile field hospitals are designed according to international standards for governments, cities, municipalities, hospitals, response agencies and medical organizations needing rapidly deployable, life-saving medical facilities following a disaster or emergency.
In addition, mobile field hospitals are majorly grouped in various categories namely Level 1 for outpatient emergency care, Level 2 for inpatient acute care, general and obstetric surgery for trauma and other major conditions while Level 3 provides complex inpatient referral surgical care.
The well-equipped mobile filed hospital donated to Djibouti will provide a quick and viable solution to traditional health facilities when the centres are unavailable or heavily congested due to unexpected high demand.

Additionally, the fully functional field hospital equipped with water supply, plumbing, power generators and biomedical equipment can be moved where needed to help respond to disasters or lessen the burden on other health care facilities.
The deployable field hospital intended for civilian health purposes is the second mobile hospital unit the US Government has donated to the Djiboutian government; the other unit is currently being used by the Ministry of Defense for military purposes.
During the handing over ceremony, Djibouti’s Minister of Health Dr. Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh acknowledged that the field hospital is an important donation illustrating the perfect fraternal and sustainable collaboration between the two governments.
The US Embassy in Djibouti disclosed that the United States government, the Office of Security Cooperation and Camp Lemonier handed over the fully equipped field hospital valued at US$4,000,00M to the Ministry of Health.
Moreover, the field hospital will enable medical professionals from Civil Affairs to conduct critical training with their counterparts from the Ministry of Health and significantly help Djiboutian health authorities to save lives and offer quality services.
US Ambassador to Djibouti Jonathan Pratt talked about the many aspects of the partnership between the US and Djibouti, adding that the US was ready to collaborate with Djiboutian partners to ensure that contributions to health care, job creation, education and security are working for the benefit of all Djiboutians.
Furthermore, Ambassador Pratt revealed that USAID has provided funding to train Djiboutians to secure jobs, to help businesses and individuals recover from the effects of COVID as well as to provide access to COVID vaccines throughout the country.
