USA – BD has acquired MedKeeper, a provider of cloud-based pharmacy management applications, which adds to BD’s existing portfolio of connected medication management tools.

The acquisition adds to the Franklin Lakes-based company’s recent growth in high-technology pharmacy solutions and further accelerates its commitment to smart, connected care.

Currently many pharmacies use a mix of manual and technical tools for their IV workflow management.

MedKeeper strategically complements BD’s existing presence in the pharmacy. MedKeeper’s cloud-based software programs will be deployed to automatically verify drug compounding processes, track medication orders and inventory and consolidate a facility’s staff training, unit inspection and other documents in one place.

MedKeeper’s platform will become part of the company’s existing portfolio of connected medication management capabilities.

By combining MedKeeper’s platform with BD’s broad technology expertise, the companies will work to optimize the preparation of compounded medications – a critical need in the pharmacy today.

BD and MedKeeper will work to provide customers with flexibility and capabilities in meeting industry standards for preparing compounded medications, incorporating the latest regulatory guidance.

The acquisition adds to the Franklin Lakes-based company’s recent growth in high-technology pharmacy solutions and further accelerates its commitment to smart, connected care.

Though BD didn’t disclose its offering price for MedKeeper, the medtech giant said it expects the acquisition to be “immaterial to BD’s fiscal 2022 financial results.”

However, in an announcement of its own, MedKeeper’s previous owner, Spanish pharmaceutical company Grifols, said it had agreed to sell the business to affiliates of BD for approximately US$93 million.

That’s a steal compared to what Grifols originally paid for MedKeeper: The pharma shelled out a total of about US$158 million across two tranches.

The first came in 2018 and saw Grifols hand over US$98 million in return for a 51% stake in the software developer.

A couple years later, it finished the job, doling out US$60.2 million for the remaining 49% of MedKeeper in late 2020.

BD also closed its acquisition of pharmacy automation firm Parata Solutions earlier in July.

As a result of its acquisition, MedKeeper will join Parata Systems under BD’s pharmacy automation umbrella. BD laid out its plans to buy out Parata in early June.

For a US$1.525 billion all-cash sticker price, BD will take control of Parata’s hardware and software systems, which range from vending machine-like robots designed to dispense, cap and sort pills to software programs that can track the progress of barcoded canisters throughout a pharmacy.
